Disclaimer

For someone who has become wary of recommending anything lest the other person dislike it or find fault, I find myself in a predicament, recommending books to a wide audience.

So, I thought it best to first issue a disclaimer: I am an adult, who does not have children of my own, who believes it is better to read and discuss things with children than to shield them from every unpleasant topic, "bad word," or questionable act.  Books can be used as springboards to discussions about family values and beliefs or ways to handle situations similar to those in a fictional novel.  The best books allow us to identify with the characters and learn from their experiences, whether we agree or disagree with their choices.

My advice: do not take my recommendation for anything other than what it is -- my opinion.  It is up to you, as parents, to determine whether a book is appropriate for your child according to your standards.  I believe that in reading books for younger audiences you will find some of the most thought-provoking, engaging, well-written, and memorable books on the market.  After all, young people are a tough audience, who will not hesitate to put down a book if they aren't captivated by the story.

So, open your mind, use your local library, and see where the stories take you and your kids.  You might be surprised.

Keri, like the disclaimer! I think people will really appreciate your honesty, and clarity. And, yes-- I think "Soapbox" is a great idea!

    Hi Keri
I read through quickly and am impressed by what you have selected to write up. It's always fun for me to see where I agree and what I have missed and need to read. Thanks for taking the time to write up and post.
    Cheers. Jody
