The Joy of Doing Things Badly by Veronica Chambers, copyright 2006
If you like books that make you reach for your journal or even a piece of scrap paper to write down something that resonates with you, this book is for you. Veronica Chambers -- journalist, novelist, writer of picture books and MG/YA, and Adventurer -- collected a series of reflective-but-fun essays about womanhood, friendship, and the wild ride of being a human. Her insights into living bravely but imperfectly in a society that prizes perfection and beauty, and the way she weaves fascinating people into inspiring revelations of her own experiences had me emailing my friend and mentor Mary with instructions to run to her computer or closest bookstore to get it so we could enjoy the journey of reading it together. To whet your appetite, here is a quote I copied into my journal:
"Of course, there is a fine line between the joyful laziness of doing things in your own time and not doing anything at all. But I have always believed that if we stay alert to the possibilities, we will each be led to our own miracles, our own moments of grace."
Be good to yourself, and pick up this book -- being perfect is highly overrated!
