The White Deer by James Thurber, copyright 1945

Jorn raised his sword.

The Black Knight kept his own sword at his side.  "There's magic here, I warn you, Prince.  What's mightier than magic?"

"Miracle."

"What's miracle?" asked the Black Knight.

"Love's miracle enough."

In a time when fairy tales and folk tales have been done to death, this "children's book" by famed comedic writer and cartoonist James Thurber is a frolic and breath of fresh air.  Brilliant word play, romance, quirky characters, and the usual three quests bring joy to an overworked genre.  A dash of Monty Python, a sprinkle of The Princess Bride, and no Disney at all, this original tale will make shared reading an unforgettable experience.  Though published as a children's book, the language is challenging, and frankly, begs to be read aloud with lots of accents, voices, and sound effects.
