My unexpected summer hiatus.

I can't believe I haven't recommended anything since May.  Crazy, but true.  The books I've been reviewing for Children's Literature have been lackluster at best.  Only one of the last five was well-written, but since it's about a teen prostitute in a reform school and depressed me terribly, I can't recommend it!

Hope is on the horizon, however!  I have a copy of Shannon Hale's Austenland from the library to occupy me this weekend, and I hope to report back here that it's worth your while!

In the meantime, let's be honest: the world has been so wrapped up in Harry Potter (and rightly so!) there's little room for other books to be discussed this summer.  I'll confess my dark secret: I read the final chapters so I would know what happened before anyone could spoil it for me, and now I'm going to wait to read the entire book until I've reread books 1-6.  Fortunately, my dear friend Mari doesn't think I'm crazy as she is rereading 1-6 too, but has more moral fiber than I do and isn't peeking at the ending!

On a final note, here is a link to an interesting article regarding the love/hate relationship people have to the Junie B. Jones books: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/26/fashion/26junie.html?pagewanted=1&_r=2.  What is your take on the topic?

Best wishes for a fabulous rest-of-your-summer!
