Wave by Suzy Lee, copyright 2008

For a writer, recommending a wordless book seems nonsensical.  But, Suzy Lee's evocative art work is such a visual treat, it's worth taking a look at.  Yes, it can be used as a writing activity for kids, inviting them to add text to each spread.  Yes, it can be used to get kids to tell a story in their own words.  What I like about it, though, is that I could practically feel the child's mixture of fear and glee as she faced and chased the waves, got soaked, and relished the deposit of seashells the wave left behind.  Besides, the book felt distinctly Californian to me, with its San Francisco publisher, Asian family, and fierce, Pacific-like surf.
