I used to live near San Luis Obispo, hometown of children's author Wendelin Van Draanen .  In this article from Publisher's Weekly I discovered that she is doing a big movie premiere in SLO with seats going to area kids, who can win tickets through raffles at local schools and libraries, as well as the local paper's book review contest.

Whether the movie is as good as book (which I loved, and have a signed copy of!) remains to be seen.  But I think a red-carpet premiere is a pretty cool thing for a writer to do for her hometown!
