Fred Rogers: Helping Children Deal with Tragedy

We don't have cable TV at our house.  This is a deliberate choice, both due to the financial aspect and the content of what we want in our home.  It does not trouble me that the only time Sarah keeps me in the modern age with word of Snooki and the Smoosh Room is after an overnight stay with a friend, rather than on a daily basis.

Dealing with children in the modern world requires us to navigate through some difficult events.  From 9/11 when my nephew became afraid for me to fly because "planes crash," to the recent shootings in Tucson, we are all confronted with inexplicable tragedies.

The people who are keeping the work of Fred Rogers alive posted some resources on their Web site for talking with children about tragic events.  My favorite quote was one in which Mr. Rogers described recalling how his mother helped him: she told him in every bad situation, look for the helpers.  Wherever there is something bad happening, find the people who help.

How do you talk to your kids about tragedy?
