Ed Emberley

I still have my first, original Ed Emberley drawing book.  It's the one about making drawings out of thumbprints, and it's so old it's done in two colors: black and orange.

An enterprising young man put together an exhibition of Ed's work, together with that of a group of young artists.  Their original works will be donated to children's hospitals.  The video of Ed talking and sharing parts of the exhibit are engaging -- he comes across as the type of person I'd like to sit down with to chat over a cup of tea.

One of my favorite ideas that he shared, and one that I know impressed me as a child, is that his books show kids they *can* draw.  He uses basic shapes and shows how to put them together to create a recognizable image.  He never imagined his "how to draw" books would be a stellar success, but they've been in print since the 1970s.  He's done other picture books as well, including the famous "Big Green Monster" that is used with young children to develop social/emotional awareness and skills.

Take a couple minutes at watch the video, link courtesy of Friarminor, who has a supercool blog.
