Just One Bite, by Lola Schaefer copyright 2010
On Friday I had the pleasure of participating in a picture book intensive workshop with author Lola Schaefer. In addition to being a smart and lovely lady, she's a dynamic instructor with 18 years of elementary classroom experience! She now serves as a writing consultant.
I purchased her book, Just One Bite, because of its innovative approach to science and awesome fold-out pages that accommodate life-size illustrations. It shows the actual size of what just one bite is for a variety of animals, beginning with an earthworm and ending with a sperm whale. That's BIG!
It's an engaging book for young readers and would make a great point of entry for discussions about nutrition, herbivores/carnivores/omnivores, and the food chain. It might even be a way to talk to a certain picky eater about that pile of peas on his plate . . . eat "just one bite!"

My only bone to pick is with the illustrator, who painted wide-bottomed honey bees, and depicted the honey comb in what appears to be a hornet's nest. Apparently, I need to write a bee book!
